Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at Qdoba Mexican Grill at The Gardens on Havana

We are recruiting volunteers to help tend the Lisa Strawn Memorial Rose Garden at The Gardens on Havana. We want our beautiful community rose garden to be in top shape this year for our summer rose garden concert series (see below for details about the concert series).

Volunteer Lunch & Learn Training Session--The Details:

When: Saturday, May 1, 2010, meet at Qdoba Mexican Grill on Garden Drive at The Gardens on Havana at 11:30 a.m.. The training will last until approximately 1:30 p.m.

What: After a light lunch at Qdoba, members of The Denver Rose Society will be on hand to give a pruning demonstration and volunteer training. We will then walk down Garden Drive to the rose garden and for hands-on training in the rose garden. We will be doing general rose garden clean-up, learn how to prune out dead canes and how to prune to shape the water-wise shrub roses and climbing roses in the garden. You will be required to sign a waiver to work in the rose garden. Rose Garden volunteers will receive a planting map showing the names and locations of the roses in the garden, as well as pruning instructional sheets. We will come up with a volunteer schedule for rose care for 2010.

Cost: This is a free training session. Those attending this training session will receive a free lunch courtesy of Miller Weingarten Realty, the owner of The Gardens on Havana.

To Register : Space is limited to the first 25 people. Please call or email Gayle if you would like to attend: 303-360-7505 or Gayle@OnHavanaStreet.com

What to bring: Please bring a sturdy pair of gloves and pruning shears, if you have then. Inclement weather note: If we are rained or snowed out on May 1, this Lunch & Learn will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 8. What is On Havana Street?

The Havana Business Improvement District (BID) d.b.a. On Havana Street, is a special district in Colorado created in 2007 by business and neighborhood leaders and Aurora city staff working together to build a stronger, better community. We really are making a difference by focusing on unique, culturally diverse events and fun new things to do to make the lives of our residents and visitors more interesting, at the same time as adopting the goals of clean, safe and beautiful for our new business district.

In November 2007, the commercial property and business owners voted to tax themselves 4.5 mills in real property tax to fund the new business district. The margin of support was 80% yes to 20% no. The stakeholders are committed to promoting commerce and community On Havana Street. There are 196 real commercial properties and approximately 500 businesses. A 9-member board, made up of all sizes and types of businesses from different sections of Havana Street, oversees district programming. Gayle Jetchick, Executive Director, is the only staff member and is responsible for day-to-day activities On Havana Street.
